Our 6-Step Cabinet Painting Process
1. Setup

A factory-like product requires a factory-like work area. Before we do anything else, we meticulously cover and protect everything in the kitchen, leaving only the surfaces that will be painted exposed. Then, we seal off the kitchen to keep any work mess contained and away from you and the rest of your home.

2. Cleaning

Paint does not adhere well when it is applied over surface contaminants like dust and grime; it will begin to peel and flake off over time, especially in high-use areas such as kitchens. To ensure a durable finish, we thoroughly clean all surfaces before painting them.

3. Repair

We carefully inspect the cleaned cabinet surfaces to identify any imperfections — scratches, nail holes, cracks, etc. — that will show through the final coat of paint. We'll repair anything that we find.

4. Surface Preparation

To ensure a strong and durable adhesion between the paint and the cabinetry, we must dull any glossy finish left by a previous coating. We achieve this by first sanding all surfaces physically, then following with an application of "liquid sandpaper" deglosser. This combination ensures that even the finest contours of your cabinets have been properly prepared for paint.

5. Primer and Paint

Once the cabinets have been properly prepared, we use an airless paint spraying technique to first apply a base coat of high-adhesion primer, followed by two coats of premium trim enamel. After each coat, we allow ample time for the paint to cure (harden).

6. Finishing Touches

With the painting complete, we can now restore your space and dismantle our work zone. We will address any final touch-ups, conduct a thorough cleaning, and then proudly present you with your transformed cabinets.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

The average cost for our kitchen cabinet painting projects is between $3,500 and $8,000, including both material and labor costs. Note that cost varies based on many factors, including the size and configuration of your kitchen, and we will always require an in-person visit to provide an accurate final estimate.

Compare this to the price of fully replacing your cabinetry at a similar level of quality. Materials and labor for brand new, high-quality cabinets can easily cost you $15,000 or more. If you have quality cabinetry already installed, painting it is often a more cost-effective (and less wasteful!) approach than a full replacement.

Yes and no. Most cabinet materials can be painted, but not all cabinet materials should be painted.

Ideal candidates for painting are solid wood or plywood cabinets, as these materials are durable and look great with a coat of paint. Cabinet surfaces such as polyester or laminate may or may not be able to be painted, depending on their quality and condition. Generally, if the surface can be sanded and otherwise properly prepared, we will be able to paint it. We recommend against painting cheap cabinetry, as a good paint job will generally outlast the cabinets themselves. Even the best coat of paint can do nothing to prevent a cheap vinyl layer from peeling over time, or weak particle board from cracking if it is bumped too hard.

We always recommend semi-gloss or high-gloss paint for cabinetry.

Glossy paint is more durable than other paint sheens and can be easily cleaned — important considerations in heavy-use areas such as kitchens and bathrooms. In addition, its higher light-reflective properties create an eye-catching finish that looks great on cabinets.

Yes! Our trusted cabinet painting process can be applied in any room where you have cabinetry installed: kitchens, pantries, bathrooms, bedrooms, closets, family rooms, home theaters, and more.

Our streamlined process takes about two weeks from start to finish.

During the first week, our focus is returning to you a usable kitchen space. We prepare and paint the cabinet frames, allow them sufficient time to cure (harden), and then restore your kitchen's functionality. During the second week, we'll work on the cabinet doors and drawers in our shop space. Once these are finished, we'll reinstall them back into your kitchen, handle any final touch-ups, then reveal your transformed space!

Unfortunately, no.

Sanding and spraying paint creates a lot of airborne dust, which we must keep contained. To protect you and the rest of your home, we keep the kitchen sealed off for the first week of the project (while we're working on the cabinet frames). We know that this can be quite inconvenient, so it is always our goal to return your living space back to you as soon as possible.
