The details make all the difference between an adequate paint job and an excellent one. We aim for excellence, every time. Here's how:
Paint belongs on your walls, not on the rest of your house. Before anything else, we thoroughly protect any objects and surfaces within the work zone. Floors, furniture, fans, light fixtures, switch plates — you name it — all get thoroughly covered or removed to guarantee that not a speck of paint gets where it doesn't belong.
Got dents, dings, nail holes, etc. in your walls or moldings? We've got you covered. We'll repair any minor imperfections like these as part of our normal service. Our expert technicians can also handle any larger fixes that may be required, such as repairing cracking or sagging drywall.
We always tape. While our experienced painters certainly have the brush and roller skills to deliver professional results without taping, no human can match the precision and reliability of using high-quality painter's tape. Modern painter's tape features paint-absorbent properties that result in ultra sharp paint lines — we guarantee you'll see the difference.
Primer provides the foundation for a pristine paint job; not all projects will require a coat of primer, but for those that do, it is a step that cannot be overlooked. We'll apply an appropriate product on any areas that need a little extra preparation, such as over stains or freshly-repaired drywall.
With our meticulous preparations complete, it is finally time to paint! Our painters will apply your chosen color(s) with curated techniques designed to achieve complete coverage and uniform texture across the entire surface.
The reveal is our favorite part of any painting project! With the paint dry, we remove all the tape to reveal crisp paint lines at every junction, dismantle our work zone, clean and tidy your space, and return it to you fully transformed.
The terms "paint sheen" and "paint finish" are used interchangeably to describe how much light is reflected off a dry, painted surface. Glossier sheens have a shiny appearance because they reflect a lot of light, while flatter sheens reflect less light and appear dull.
Sheen choice is an important factor for any paint job, as it impacts both the aesthetics and functionality of the finished project. Variations in paint formulation not only create different reflective characteristics, but also influence the durability of the paint. As a paint is made glossier (shinier), it becomes more resistant to wear and easier to clean.
Standard paint sheens, ranked from shiniest and most durable to dullest and least durable:
1. High Gloss or Gloss
2. Semi-Gloss
3. Satin
4. Eggshell
5. Matte
6. Flat
Note that each paint manufacturer names their products slightly differently, but all should follow this general scale. Want to compare different sheens side by side? Visit your local paint store! Paint stores typically have a display showing different sheens next to each other under various lighting conditions.
It depends on where it will be used. Our typical recommendation is to select a sheen based primarily on its practicality, with aesthetics being a secondary consideration.
Doors and Moldings: Gloss or Semi-Gloss
Doors and trim pieces such as window sills and baseboards endure some of the most wear and tear in a home. Gloss or semi-gloss paint is highly durable and easy to clean, making it the best choice for these frequently touched areas. We also love how a shinier finish subtly highlights trim against walls and ceilings.
Walls: Satin
Most walls actually have slight contours and other minor imperfections, which can be more or less obvious depending on the lighting in the room. Shiny (gloss or semi-gloss) paint tends to draw attention to these imperfections, while flatter paints can help to hide them. However, the duller the sheen, the less protection the paint provides for your walls. With these considerations in mind, our painters always recommend a satin finish for walls. High-quality satin paint is still quite durable and easy to clean, and its "slight-shine" finish is not a concern because our painters take great care to minimize the imperfections in your walls before painting them (see step 2 of "The Brushworks Painting Method" section of this page).
Aren't the biggest fan of satin? In areas that need less maintenance, such as dining rooms and bedrooms, feel free to select an eggshell or matte finish as an alternative. However, we don't recommend straying away from satin in heavy-use areas such as kitchens and bathrooms, or if your household has pets or young children.
Ceilings: Flat
Flat paint is the optimal choice for ceilings; it comes at a lower cost than other finishes and excels at hiding imperfections. In addition, ceilings require little to no maintenance, so its reduced durability is not an issue.
Absolutely! In our experience, buying cheap paint is a mistake.
Firstly, higher quality paint offers superior coverage compared to cheaper alternatives. A single coat of premium paint is often equivalent to multiple coats of a cheaper one, which can nullify any perceived cost savings. You are not saving money if you have to buy two gallons instead of one!
Higher quality paints also tend to look better once they are dry. They are easier to apply, dry more evenly, and blend better, factors which all contribute to a smooth final appearance. Superior formulation also increases durability, making high-quality paint better suited to withstand daily wear and tear — and our recommendation to ensure a long-lasting paint job.
Minor repair work that can be completed in one step, such as caulking small gaps and filling nail holes, dents, and dings, is always included as part of our normal service.
When our painters inspect your space for an estimate, we look for any problem areas that will require more extensive repair: large drywall holes, cracking or sagging drywall, popping nails, water damage, splintered moldings, etc. We'll give our recommendations on the best way to fix these problems, and adjust the quote accordingly.
